Psychological Therapy

I offer an integrated approach to therapy. This means I draw from a range of theories and therapy approaches, in order to best meet an individual's needs. I am trained in and use the following therapeutic approaches:
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or ACT

  • Compassion Focused Therapy or CFT

  • Mindfulness

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)

  • Systemic Psychotherapy

Psychologists do therapy with rather than to people and so therapy involves a partnership between therapist and client. Therapy follows a comprehensive assessment, which leads a ‘road map’ on how best to move forward. It is important that the right therapeutic approach is developed. This will be based on your goals, needs and preferences. If I believe the best approach for you lies outside my areas of expertise, I will try to help you identify the right professional or service, appropriate for your needs.

How long will I need Therapy?

Psychological therapy does not go on forever! It is difficult to predict exactly how long the work might take due to the many factors that impact on the pace of progress/change. Therapy can be short, medium or long term. We will review your progress on a regular basis.

What else might I need to consider before deciding what is best for me?

It is normal to feel anxious about undertaking work with a Psychologist and indeed to have mixed feelings about it. I will do my best to work at a pace and manner that suit you.
Making changes in our lives, especially if these are in relation to longstanding patterns, is often challenging. For this reason psychological therapy is often hard work. Therapy is only effective when both parties are committed and motivated to achieving the therapeutic goals agreed. Like other things, the more we put in, the more we get out of the process. For this reason, it is important to consider if the time is right for you to undertake therapy.
